Move-out cleaning checklist, room by room

6 min read

Move-out cleans are judged on details: inside appliances, baseboards, and marks on walls. Work through this list in order, or hand it to a cleaner so nothing is missed on handover day.

Kitchen

  • Empty and wipe inside all cabinets and drawers
  • Clean inside the oven, stovetop, range hood and filter
  • Defrost the freezer, then wash inside the fridge and pull it out to clean behind
  • Run an empty dishwasher cycle with cleaner, wipe the seal and filter
  • Degrease backsplash, counters and the sink drain

Bathrooms

  • Descale shower glass, tiles and grout lines
  • Scrub the toilet, including the base and behind it
  • Clear hair from drains and polish taps
  • Wipe exhaust fan covers and mirror edges
  • Empty and wash the vanity inside

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Wipe inside closets, shelves and closet tracks
  • Dust light fixtures, vents and ceiling fan blades
  • Spot-clean walls, switch plates and door handles
  • Clean baseboards and window sills
  • Vacuum carpets; steam-clean if the lease requires it

Whole home and final walkthrough

  • Interior windows, tracks and patio doors
  • Wash floors last, working toward the exit
  • Replace burnt-out bulbs and furnace filter
  • Remove all garbage and recycling from the property
  • Photograph each room after cleaning as your record

Timing tip

Book the cleaner after the movers leave and before the final inspection — most Canadian leases require the unit empty for a proper move-out clean, and same-day slots fill fast at month end.
